CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
Blackpool Sixth has been accredited as a Leadership Skills Foundation Centre of Excellence in light of the exceptional work undertaken as part of our Community Sports Leaders and Higher Sports Leaders provision at the college.
The Leadership Skills Foundation describe Centres of Excellence as 'beacon status awarded to centres that deliver high quality leadership programmes and celebrates the wide-ranging impact that volunteering has in their local communities. These centres are strong advocates of developing leadership skills in young people . The status recognises centres that are going above and beyond with their implementation of leadership thus empowering their learners to believe, lead and succeed'"
Level 2 – Community Sports Leader Award
This is open to all BTEC Sport and BTEC Sports Science students in Year 1 (Lower Sixth) as an additional qualification. This is our entry level Sports Leaders Award where students will be introduced to the five key skills of a successful Sports Leaders.

- Teamwork
- Problem-Solving
ABOUT THIS COURSE
The course will take you on a journey to gain employability skills that will improve your:
- Ability to communicate with others
- Self esteem and confidence in your own ability
- Ability to work with others as part of a team
- Skills needed to manage your own work and personal development
- Ability to identify problems and what to do to problem solve
- Ability to adapt your skills to meet the needs of the environment
Students will meet with our Sports Leaders UK qualified tutor once a week. The course content will be a mixture of written work, practical leadership within college and supporting Active Blackpool in their delivery of primary and secondary school events in the community.
Level 3 – Higher Sports Leader Award (16 UCAS Points)
This is open to selected BTEC Sport and BTEC Sports Science students in Year 2 (Upper Sixth) following their successful completion of Community Sports Leaders Award.
This is our more advanced Sport Leaders Award where students who have excelled in CSL can further develop their leadership skills whilst learning about topics such as:
- Creating a personal development plan
- Creating a personal development plan
- Barriers to participation
- Duty of care for coaches and leaders
- Writing risk assessments
- Physiological, psychological and social benefits of physical activity in the community
- Creating inclusive and progressive physical activity sessions
ABOUT THIS COURSE
Students will meet with our Sports Leaders UK qualified tutor twice a week and the course content will be a mixture of written work, practical leadership within college and supporting Active Blackpool in their delivery of primary and secondary school events in the community.
Those successfully completing the Higher Sports Leader Award will receive 16 UCAS points to help with entry to university courses.
