helen-fwName: Helen Thornley

Contact: helen.thornley@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk or liaison@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk

Role: Deputy Head of Admissions and School Liaison

Brief description: I work with our school liaison officers to ensure that students in schools get as much information, advice and guidance as possible about the opportunities that Blackpool Sixth can offer them.

We work in schools delivering career planning sessions and building students’ knowledge about further education. We organise events at the sixth form which include tours, visits to departments, taster sessions, workshops and masterclasses. We also invite students from schools to attend other types of events such as talks by eminent speakers, debates, sports competitions and music and drama performances.

We organise a wide range of subject taster sessions for Year 11 students in March every year and we welcome all our applicants to our New Student day in July.”

Highlight of your job: “I really enjoy meeting a wide range of students and helping them to make  important decisions about their future. Seeing students enjoying college life with us and celebrating their achievements is fantastic. I love the fact that my job is so varied and there is never a dull moment!”

nicName: Nichola Coleman

Contact: nichola.coleman@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk or liaison@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk

Role: School Liaison Officer

Brief description:  “I offer advice and guidance to school students about career pathways, course choices and what it’s like to be a student at Blackpool Sixth. I work in all of our partner schools but take additional responsibilities for six of them. These schools include, Highfield Humanities College, Montgomery High School,  Aspire Academy, Unity Academy, South Shore Academy and St Aidan’s Church of England School.”

Highlight of your job: “I really enjoy meeting school students and helping them through their decision making journey. I get great satisfaction from working with students that have no idea what they want to do when they finish school. It’s a fantastic feeling to be able to support them and know that my guidance and encouragement leads to them making the right course decisions. To be part of their journey and be able to see them happy and settled as our students in September is wonderful.

I enjoy working to promote the sixth form as the courses and facilities we have to offer are truly outstanding and it really is an incredible next step towards their career success… it makes my job easy 🙂”

Schools I visit: Aspire Academy, South Shore Academy, Unity Academy, Saint Aidan’s Church of England High School, Montgomery High School and Highfield Leadership Academy.

fayName: Fay Logan

Contact: fay.logan@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk or liaison@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk

Role: School Liaison Officer

Previous role: “Before coming to Sixth Form I’ve always worked in the hospitality industry.  From event manager at a local catering company to brasserie manager at a gorgeous wedding venue in Clitheroe.  My previous roles were fast paced and one day was never the same as another.  I felt this role would be similar as it incorporates my event management skills with our open days and taster sessions and I’m still on the go with visiting different schools every week!”

Brief description: “Myself and Nichola have a group of schools we work with.  Mine include; Millfield Science and Performing Arts College, Garstang Community Academy, Saint Bede’s Catholic High School, Hodgson Academy, St. Georges School, Cardinal Allen Catholic High School and Fleetwood High School.  We do regular classroom sessions, drop in’s and mentoring sessions with the schools to promote the Sixth Form, but also to guide the students to make the right decision with regards to their future.”

What are you looking forward to in this role? “I am looking forward to working with the students.  Either at their schools within a session or here via open days and promoting the Blackpool Sixth the best I can!”

Highlight so far? “Meeting the team, I feel I’ve been met with open arms.  Such a lovely team and I already feel at home.”

Schools I visit: Millfield Science and Performing Arts College, Garstang Community Academy, St Bede’s Rc High School, Hodgson Academy, St George’s School, Cardinal Allen Catholic High School and Fleetwood High School.
