Adam’s career ready after stint at top accountancy firm
Work experience has added up to some great careers advice for Blackpool Sixth student Adam Todd.
Adam, 17, has spent a week with top auditing and accountancy firm RSM, as part of his Career Ready internship. He is currently studying A levels in business, maths and physical education.
Career Ready is a national initiative which aims to give young people expert advice in how to get their dream job by preparing them for interviews and giving them valuable work experience via summer internships.
RSM specialise in auditing, tax and consultancy and they employ over 41,000 people in 116 countries.
“I went to RSM which was based in Guildford as I had family down there so I stayed with them for a week which was good,” said Adam. “It was mainly to get more experience to put on my CV and RSM being one of the leading businesses in accounting and consultancy I felt it was the best firm to do it with.”
“I have wanted to go into accountancy and so RSM provided me with work experience in auditing, accredited business advice, private client tax and corporate tax,” added Adam.
“I got valuable knowledge into the world of work for this and made me realise things that I didn’t know I could do that I enjoyed.
“I am so glad I went to do it as it has opened my eyes to a lot and has helped me understand the working environment in an office environment.”
Daniel Reeds, business studies tutor, said: “The career ready programme gives students the opportunity to really engage with industry professionals within their chosen career path.
“The main part of the programme is gaining four weeks’ work experience with some major companies in the UK.
“Being able to gain work experience has allowed the students to really understand what employers look for in potential employers and work on their transferable skills such as communication and leadership.”
Businesses both national and locally based are involved in Career Ready and students have undertaken internships this summer with employers such as Virgin, Randstad, NST, the Pleasure Beach and Wyre Borough Council.
