Perfect score for Jack in Classics
Last month Blackpool Sixth students and staff were celebrating our best ever A level and BTEC Level 3 results with a brilliant 99.6% pass rate and nearly 70% high grades. The success certainly wasn’t limited to our second year students. Amongst those taking AS exams at the end of their first year, there were lots of fantastic achievements. One example of this is A level student, Jack Webster, who gained an amazing perfect score of 200/200 in his AS Classical Civilisation (Ancient History) exams.
Jack, a former St. George’s School student, commented, ‘I’m really pleased with the result. The classics team gave me lots of support to help me achieve full UMS on my lower sixth classics course. Studying both history courses has really inspired me to continue the study of the subject and I hope to go on to read history at Oxford next year.’
Four other students from the humanities department achieved near perfect scores in their classics (ancient history) or law exams. Tori Lord, Ethan Lees, James Knowles and Katie Rodgers all gained 194 out of 200 or above in their exams.
Other notable first year high achievers from the department included Katie Donnelli-Hunn, Robyn Moss, Beckie Munro and Daisy Balshaw.
Curriculum leader for humanities, Matthew Speight said, ‘We are extremely proud of all our students – they have worked incredibly hard to secure success. Achieving such high marks is a wonderful achievement and will allow them to apply to the top universities. It is very pleasing when our dedicated students achieve the grades they deserve.’
National changes to A level qualifications mean that existing AS qualifications are being phased out in favour of ‘linear’ qualifications with public exams only at the end of two years of study. Blackpool Sixth students will still sit internal exams in their first year to help prepare them for their final A level exams.
