The Blackpool Sixth Form College Corporation

Governance: Role of the Governing Body

The Blackpool Sixth Form College is an incorporated body. It is governed by a board of 15 directors. The role of the Board of Directors is to:

  • Agree the strategic direction for the college and ensure clarity of vision and ethos
  • Hold the Principal to account for the educational performance of the college and its students and the performance management of staff
  • Oversee the financial performance of the college, making sure that it remains solvent and that money is well spent.

There is a clear difference between governance and the day-to-day management of the college. The Principal and her Senior Leadership Team are responsible for the operation of the college within the strategic direction agreed by the Corporation.

Chair of Directors’ Message – Wendy Middlemas

I am absolutely delighted and very proud to have been elected as Chair of Directors at The Blackpool Sixth Form College.  At its last inspection, the college was judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. They commented that, while being situated in one of the most deprived boroughs in the country, the college continued to enable many students to be the first in their families to follow A level courses.  Achieving the best academic outcomes is our responsibility and prepares our students for their future in employment.

One of our seven Core Values – Excellence and High Aspirations – states that we are ‘striving to be the best we can be’. This was demonstrated in 2017, when the college was the best performing sixth form in the Fylde Coast and one of the top colleges in the country for value-added outcomes.  In other words at Blackpool Sixth students made above average progress between their GCSEs and their A levels or BTEC level 3s.

Leadership, staff, students and the Directors will continue to work tirelessly to prepare our students to fulfil their academic ambitions, to enable them to be successful in their chosen careers and to play a responsible role within their community.
